Photography

The Photographic Discipline is underpinned by the belief that you need to understand how and why images work in order to use them effectively.

“The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.”

INTRODUCTION

The Photographic Discipline is underpinned by the belief that you need to understand how and why images work in order to use them effectively. Technological advances have created more opportunities for visually literate and creative individuals to play an active role in the conception, production and dissemination of photographic imagery.

You will be encouraged to develop your own learning objectives, and to tailor your experience to meet your own needs and aspirations, be that in advertising, documentary, fashion, independent or any other area of contemporary professional practice.

COURSE CONTENT

The content and structure of the course follows a sequential progression to introduce you to the essential skills and understanding needed to undertake the study.

In level 1/year 1, you will work in a variety of disciplines with an emphasis on thinking, looking, doing and making.

In level 2/year 2, you concentrate on Photography, balanced with internship opportunity. Creative ideas, aesthetics and technology play an important part. At the end of level 2/year 2, you will prepare ideas for level 3/year 3 Negotiated Projects.

For level 3/year 3, we place the emphasis on sharing the responsibility for your own development. You will negotiate an individual programme of study, including a major project linked to a final essay. Throughout the course, you will go through Contextual Studies, integrated in relevant modules.

There are three levels of progression, each containing ten 120 hour modules or equivalent.

ASSESSMENT

The material assessed is the learning outcome of each module. Each module is assessed according to the stipulated course module criteria and the university regulations.
